A TRIP TO EUROPE IN 1996

I WENT TO EUROPE IN 1996 WITH 2 FRIENDS.  ONE OF THE FRIENDS WORKED AT AMERICAN AIRLINES AND WE COULD FLY AS FRIENDS AT THE SAME RATE AS EMPLOYEES, THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS THAT WE WERE FLYING STAND-BY.  THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A LITTLE PROBLEM.  THE DAY WE WERE TO FLY OUT OF TULSA THERE WAS SOME BAD WEATHER SOMEWHERE AND THE PLANES WERE  STACKED UP COMING OUT OF DALLAS.  EACH TIME A PLANE WOULD COME IN IT WOULD FILL UP AND THERE WAS NO ROOM FOR US.  WE FINALLY RENTED A CAR, DROVE TO DALLAS AND GOT ON A PLANE FOR CHICAGO.  NATURALLY WE GOT TO CHICAGO TOO LATE TO CATCH THE FLIGHT FOR FRANKFORT SO WE GOT A HOTEL FOR THE NIGHT.  THE NEXT MORNING WE WENT TO THE AIRPORT TO SEE ABOUT A FLIGHT.  THERE WAS ONLY ONE FLIGHT TO FRANKFORT AND IT WAS ABOUT 8 PM.  WE WENT DOWNTOWN AND LOOKED AT CHICAGO AND WENT BACK TO CATCH THE FLIGHT ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS FULL.  THE NEXT FLIGHT OUT WENT TO BRUSSELS, IT WAS FULL.  THE LAST FLIGHT TO EUROPE THAT NIGHT WAS TO LONDON AND THERE WAS ROOM FOR US SO WE TOOK IT.  IT WAS THE MOST COMFORTABLE FLIGHT I HAVE EVER BEEN ON BECAUSE WE HAD BUSINESS CLASS AND LET ME TELL YOU THAT IS A WHOLE OTHER WORLD FROM COACH.  I HAD A GLASS OF WINE IN MY HAND BEFORE WE LEFT THE GATE AND A MENU FOR MY DINNER, THE SEAT RECLINED AND I WAS A HAPPY CAMPER.
WHEN WE ARRIVED IN LONDON IT WAS DAYLIGHT AND I GOT A GOOD LOOK AT THE CITY AS WE LANDED AT HEATHROW.  WE WENT TO THE TICKET COUNTER AND BOUGHT A TICKET ON LUFTSTANZA FOR FRANKFORT.  OUR LUGGAGE WAS ALREADY IN FRANKFORT.  WHILE WE WERE WAITING FOR THE PLANE TO TAKE OFF THEY FED US LUNCH AND I COULD TELL THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE SAME GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS THAT WE HAD BECAUSE THEY PASSED A BIG BASKET OF UNWRAPPED SANDWICHES DOWN THE AISLE FOR EVERYONE TO TAKE ONE.  THEN SOME ARMED MEN CAME ON  AND ESCORTED A MAN OFF THE PLANE.  THEN WE TOOK OFF.  WE GOT TO FRANKFORT, RENTED A CAR AND DROVE TO ROTHENBURG, MUNICH, RUETTE AUSTRIA, BADEN BADEN AND THEN BACK TO FRANKFORT TO CATCH THE TRAIN TO PARIS.
I WAS SURPRISED WHEN I STARTED TO SCAN THESE PICTURES THAT WE HADN'T TAKEN MORE OF THEM.  THIS WAS BACK IN THE DAY WHEN YOU HAD TO HAVE THEM DEVELOPED, I GUESS THAT IS WHY WE DIDN'T TAKE AS MANY AS WE DO NOW WITH THE DIGITAL CAMERAS.

SOME SCENES OF PARIS

At the top of Montmartre looking at all the artist and their wares.  I have a suitcase with me that I bought up there.  It has a handle on it, now that may not seem special now but in 1996 it was.  The suitcase that I brought with me had 4 wheels and a leash that you pulled it with.  After pulling that thing on the cobblestones in Paris and having it fall over every 3 feet I was ready for something better.  Now all the suitcases are like this but then it was something new.

UNDER THE EIFFEL TOWER

We are taking the train from Frankfort Germany to Paris

The train conductor.
One of the very fast trains that they had in 1996.  I am sure they have faster ones now.
A scene from the train of the German country side.

The train compartment was very comfortable.  There were 6 very nice chairs and you can just barely see the hallway on the very far right side of the picture.  The hallway ran down the right side of the train and the compartments were glassed in and had a door.
We are having lunch on the train.
We finally made it to our hotel room in Paris.
This is looking from our window to the little cafe down below.  We ate breakfast here each morning.Posted by Picasa

Montmartre

Some of the steps on the Montmartre.

This is a link that tells about this area.  http://www.aviewoncities.com/paris/montmartre.htm

A view of Paris from the Montmartre.  This is the highest point in Paris and this was taken with the panoramic camera.

Watching for our stop on the underground.  I remember that there were soldiers standing around with machine guns at that time.  I don't remember why.

Another view from our hotel, I seem to remember that you could see the top of the Eiffel Tower in this direction.
Another view from the top of Montmartre.
